A pleasant, manageable zoo with shade and good value, especially online. Rated 4 rather than 5 because of the hour-plus drive and modest size.
Overview
The Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens is a nonprofit, AZA-accredited zoo in Sanford, about an hour north of ChampionsGate. It is set in a shaded wetland hammock with boardwalks.
Highlights: More than 300 animals across African, Asian, South American and Florida habitats, including cheetahs, rhinos, clouded leopards, giant anteaters, sloths and many reptiles in the herpetarium. Keeper talks and animal encounters run through the day. Kids also enjoy a train ride, a carousel and the Wild Florida area with native species. The Zoo's Wild Adventures zip line and treetop course (extra) is great for older kids and teens.
Who it's for: Mainly families with toddlers and young kids. It is smaller and calmer than a big theme-park zoo, the shade helps in the heat, and it takes 3-4 hours.
Practical tips (official site): Open daily 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Buy online: it saves $5 per adult and $2 per child. Free parking. Food is available on site, and picnic areas are just outside the gate. Seasonal events include Asian Lantern Festival-style nights, Boo at the Zoo and holiday lights, all ticketed separately.
Pairs well with: Historic downtown Sanford and its riverwalk on Lake Monroe, 10 minutes away. Or combine it with Blue Spring (#9), 25 minutes north, on a winter manatee day.
