Why it's rated 5/5

A newer, award-winning 168-acre park with a huge playground, canopy walk, botanical gardens and nature center. Free, and only 36 minutes from the property. Great value and a 'locals' gem.

Overview

Bonnet Springs Park opened in Lakeland in 2022 on 168 acres of reclaimed railyard and wetland along Lake Bonnet Creek. It was built with major philanthropic support and quickly became one of Florida's most praised new public parks. It is about 36 minutes from ChampionsGate via I-4.

What's there: A large, imaginative adventure playground with climbing towers and slides. An elevated canopy walk through the tree tops. Botanical gardens and a butterfly garden. The Nature Center with exhibits and live animals, plus a children's museum space. There are miles of walking and biking trails, a lake with boat rentals at times, a restaurant and café, and frequent events such as concerts and festivals.

Who it's for: Everyone. It is especially good for families with toddlers and kids. It is free, very clean and very well designed.

Practical tips (official site): The grounds are open daily 6 a.m.-7 p.m. Indoor buildings such as the Nature Center and children's areas keep shorter hours, and some may charge, so check the site. Free parking. Bring sun protection; shade is still growing in. Go in the morning or late afternoon in summer.

Pairs well with: Bok Tower Gardens (#11) in Lake Wales on a "south day," or Lakeland's Florida Southern College Frank Lloyd Wright buildings.

Note: we use bonnetspringspark.com, the active official site; the .org address did not resolve.

Good to know

Free parking. Some indoor attractions or activities may cost extra.

Worth a quick check

Still being confirmed with the venue:

  • Whether the nature center/children's museum charges
  • Boat rental availability
