A beautiful, peaceful National Historic Landmark with a 205-ft singing tower and live carillon concerts, close to the property. Rated 4 because younger kids may get bored without the children's garden.
Overview
Bok Tower Gardens, in Lake Wales about 45 minutes south of ChampionsGate, was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. and dedicated in 1929 by Edward Bok. It is a National Historic Landmark set on Iron Mountain, one of the highest points in peninsular Florida.
Highlights: The Singing Tower, a 205-foot marble and coquina tower holding a 60-bell carillon. Live carillon concerts at 1 and 3 p.m. daily, with recorded music every half hour. The reflection pool with koi and the famous view of the tower. Shaded woodland paths and the Window by the Pond wildlife blind. The Hammock Hollow Children's Garden, with water play, a mud kitchen and climbing logs. Pinewood Estate, a 1930s Mediterranean-revival mansion, is open for tours (extra fee).
Who it's for: Adults and garden lovers above all, but families with kids will find the children's garden a strong draw. It is quiet and contemplative; on a nice day it is an easy half-day.
Practical tips (official site): Open daily 8 a.m.-6 p.m., last admission 5 p.m. Buy online to save $3 per adult. The interior of the tower is not open to visitors. Blue Palmetto Café is on site and picnics are allowed in designated areas. Free parking. Pets are not allowed (service animals only). The gardens run seasonal events, including Christmas lights and a spring plant sale.
Pairs well with: Combine it with Bonnet Springs Park (#21) in Lakeland or Legoland if you are already heading south.
