Short answer

Rainy day or rest day near Kissimmee with kids? Indoor ideas at the villa, resort water parks, Gatorland, Old Town, and Sunset Walk, plus how to plan a no-park day for 16.

It's going to rain. This is Florida.

In summer, it storms most afternoons. In winter, you might get a gray, chilly day. Either way, you need a plan B.

Good news: for plenty of families, the favorite days are the ones they didn't go anywhere.

The best rainy day is the one at home

Kellie wrote this in her review: "We had one day where it was a thunderstorm all day and between the pool and all the games and toys they were kept busy."

Whitney's family spent spring break "singing karaoke and watching movies in the theater on a cool, rainy day."

That's what a house built for it looks like. Here's what's inside SuperVilla, all listed on the house page:

  • The Star Wars theater. A 110-inch projector and 9 theater seats. Movie marathon.
  • The Marvel game room. Pool table, air hockey, foosball, and an Xbox. Someone will demand a rematch.
  • Karaoke. Someone's uncle will sing. You'll never forget it.
  • The themed rooms. Harry Potter, Star Wars, Encanto, and Frozen with a slide (plus a closet of princess costumes).
  • The toddler play space under the stairs. Toy kitchen, magnetic tiles, cars, books. Toddlers live there.

A plan for a stormy afternoon:

TimeActivity
MorningPancakes. Pool if it's dry.
NoonStorm rolls in. Everyone out of the water.
1 PMMovie in the theater.
3 PMGame room tournament. Air hockey bracket.
5 PMKaraoke while dinner cooks.
7 PMStorm's gone. Back in the pool (heated, if you added heat).

Summer storms usually pass. When there's thunder, get out of the pool and stay out until it's quiet.

A rest day at the resort

Some days aren't rainy. You're just tired. Disney walking adds up, especially for little legs.

Your stay includes free access to two resort amenity centers, both open 10 AM to 8 PM. The Retreat Club is a 3-minute walk. The Oasis Clubhouse is a 6-minute drive. Guests have written about the slides and splash areas:

  • Shellie: "The pools, water slides, and lazy river made it feel like a full resort experience."
  • Sherri's group "did venture out to the slides, which are on property and super fun."
  • Shanna: "We also enjoyed the clubhouse and the waterpark!"

For a side-by-side, read Retreat Club vs. Oasis Clubhouse.

A note for this season: Universal's Volcano Bay water park is closed for maintenance and plans to reopen on or before April 1, 2027. The resort water areas are a good stand-in.

Out and about in Kissimmee

If you want to leave the house, these are well-known local spots. Check hours and weather policies before you go.

Gatorland

A classic. Gators, shows, and a very Florida afternoon. It's open daily 10 AM to 5 PM, rain or shine (checked Oct 2026). Still, it's mostly outdoors, so save it for a dry day.

Old Town Kissimmee

A retro-style street of shops, rides, and food. Good for an evening stroll.

Fun Spot America, Kissimmee

Go-karts and rides. It opens in the afternoon on many weekdays, so check the calendar. Teens love it.

Sunset Walk

The dining and shopping strip at Margaritaville Resort. GameTime there is an arcade and restaurant under one roof. Good for a rainy evening with food.

A day trip

If the forecast is clear, a beach day is doable. See the day trips guide.

How many rest days do you need?

For a week-long trip, plan one or two. More if you have toddlers or grandparents.

Some families take that much further. Kellie: "We didn't even do Disney and still had a blast here." Marcus wrote that "our kids may have enjoyed this place more than the parks!"

Nobody's saying skip Disney. Just that rest days don't feel like a loss when the house is this fun.

Tips for rain on a park day

If it starts raining at the park:

  • Pack ponchos from home. Park ones cost more.
  • Indoor rides and shows keep running.
  • Crowds often thin out in the rain.
  • From ChampionsGate, home is 14 miles from Magic Kingdom. Bailing early is an option.
